Family Flatidae, Subfamily Flatinae

Caution

Many of the insects depicted on these pages are outwardly similar and you should not use photographs as the sole means of identification. These pages form part of a scientific key which will assist a trained entomologist to identify the species accurately.

Family/Subfamily: Flatidae/Flatinae

Economic Status: The species of Flatidae of economic importance, both in Australia and in other countries, cause damage primarily by excretion of sticky honeydew in sufficient quantity to encourage the growth of sooty moulds on plants. This leads to reduction in photosynthetic capacity and damage to the appearance of fruit, making it unmarketable.

Notes: Australia has a rich and varied fauna of the family Flatidae, few of which are of economic importance. Keys for identification of Australian Flatidae to genera are available HERE.
