Anyllis leiala Kirkaldy

Genus Anyllis Kirkaldy 1906: 386
Type species: Anyllis leiala Kirkaldy, by original designation.

Generic distribution: Australia

Australian species: Three species are known from Australia. Anyllis tiegsi (China) is known from Victoria and the higher parts of SE NSW, A. leiala Kirkaldy is found throughout the eastern part of Australia from North Queensland to Tasmania and A. spinostylus from Tasmania. [update: 17.v.2006]

Comments: Anyllis leiala is one of the most common species of Australian spittlebugs. It is frequently attracted to lights and can be swept from a wide range of shrubby native plants. A. tiegsi differs from A. leiala in only minor differences in the male genitalia but the clear V-shaped marking on the tegmen also appears to be diagnostic.
