Last update
This key will enable any leafhopper found in Australia and neighbouring regions to be identified to Subfamily or Tribe. Checklists of species in each country are provided for each group and identification keys are provided to enable identification to genus for those groups that are sufficiently well known for this to be possible.
New Zealand Arthropod Collection (NZAC)
Links can be found throughout this key to the appropriate part of Larivière and Fletcher's (2004) keys to the New Zealand species provided on the New Zealand Arthropod Collection (NZAC) website. These links are marked as shown below.
Species lists for Indonesia and New Guinea
Links are provided at the end points of the key to species lists for Indonesia and New Guinea. These are provided as part of this package.
Some of the Subfamilies occurring in Australia and neighbouring countries have not been comprehensively studied and, in those subfamilies, many undescribed species are known to occur and are not included in the checklists. Care needs to be taken in relying on use of this key for identification of leafhoppers. Confirmation of identifications, requiring dissection of the genitalia of male specimens, needs to be carried out by a specialist cicadellid taxonomist.
