This key will allow identifications of the planthoppers (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea) known to occur in Australia and New Zealand to the taxonomic level of Family. A checklist of known species, in their most recently accepted taxonomic combination, is provided for each Family.
Within some Families, the key leads further to allow identification to Subfamily, Tribe, Genus or Species. These subsequent keys are marked where they occur. Keys to the New Zealand genera are being developed for the web by Dr M.-C. Larivière, NZAC. Links to these are provided from the appropriate section of this website.
The Australian fulgoroid fauna in most families has been poorly studied and identification to species in many Families is not possible without extensive additional revisionary work. The checklists provided are based on current published literature and almost certainly contain errors of combination and synonymies that will only be determined through further taxonomic research. There is also a significant portion of the Australian fulgoroid fauna still undescribed.
Suggestions, criticisms and comment on this website, or Australian fulgoroid specimens for identification, may be sent to the author:
