Australian species: Four species are recognised in Australia
Distribution: Australia (New South Wales,
Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia,
Victoria, Western Australia), Fiji, New Caledonia,
Society Islands, Cook Islands.
Notes: Oteana differs from all other Australian pentastirine genera in the unique combination of the following features: 3 lateral spines on the hind tibia, 7 apical teeth on the 1st hind tarsomere and 5 apical teeth on the 2nd hind tarsomere (Löcker 2006a).
Löcker et al. (2006a) recognised two species groups in Australia based on the structures of the male genitalia: the lubra group with three Australian species and 13 species from the Society and Cook Islands and O. sponsa on its own.
