Family Eurybrachidae - Eurybrachid planthoppers

The Australian Eurybrachidae are a quite distinctive component of the world fauna. Fennah (1964) regarded all Australian species to belong in the Tribe Platybrachini and provided a key to the 13 included genera, 10 of which are endemic to Australia. The most widespread genus within Australia is Platybrachys the species of which are usually found on the main trunk of trees of the myrtaceous genus Eucalyptus. The biology of P. leucostigma was described by Hacker (1924). Species of some genera appear to be associated with Acacia.

There are no records of Eurybrachidae from New Guinea which probably indicates that further work is needed to catalogue the New Guinean fauna. The family is represented in Indonesia by a number of species of Eurybrachini but only one occurs east of the Wallace Line.

The world fauna is currently being reviewed by Jerôme Constant in Belgium. Note that some authors use Eurybrachyidae rather than Eurybrachidae.

Note: In his original description of Olonia nigroapicata, Jacobi (1928) indicated that he had only a single male available. Constant (pers. comm. 2007) has indicated that the only specimen available amongst Jacobi's material is a female. Because of the possibility that there was other material available, Constant (2006b) has designated a lectotype rather than recognising the single female as a holotype by monotypy.

Eurybrachys transversa Walker 1858: 96, nomen dubium Constant 2005: 66
Olonia transversa (Walker), Stål 1862a: 488

Note: Constant (2005) examined a specimen in BMNH which was labelled as the type of this species. He identified this specimen, which is in parts glued to a card, as a male of Gelastopsis insignis Kirkaldy, and not the specimen on which Walker (1858) based his description of E. transversa. The type of E. transversa is therefore missing. The species was erroneously declared a nomen nudum by Constant (2005) when he meant nomen dubium.

Platybrachys barbata (Fabricius)

Cicada barbata Fabricius 1775: 684
Platybrachys barbata (Fabricius), Distant 1906b: 206
Eurybrachys rubiginea Walker 1851: 386, synonymised by Distant 1906b: 206
Platybrachys rubiginea (Walker), Stål 1862a: 488

Note: The record of this species from India originated from Gmelin (1789) and is almost certainly erroneous. Metcalf (1956) listed "4 New South Wales. 5 Queensland" but neither of these numbers appear in his bibliographic list for the species. Kirkaldy (1906) synonymised E. rubiginea with E. sicca and noted that specimens from Cairns and Bundaberg appeared to be "var rubiginea", so this has been taken as records of P. barbata from Queensland. Records from NT come from Lallemand (1935: 675)

Platybrachys maculipennis (Le Guillou)

Eurybrachys maculipennis Le Guillou 1841: 260
Platybrachys maculipennis (Le Guillou), Kirkaldy 1906: 444

Note: Hacker (1924) provided some biological notes on this species in SE Queensland where he found it on the trunk of the stringybark, Eucalyptus acmenioides.
The holotype is a female in MNHN, Paris (J. Constant, pers. comm. 2010). The source of Le Guillou's original material is probably Raffles Bay, Northern Territory at 11º16' S 132º24' E. Le Guillou was on the French gunboat Zélée which accompanied the Astrolabe on its circumnavigation voyage of 1837-1840 from France to Antarctica, across the Pacific, through the Solomons Islands to Guam and Indonesia, thence into Torres Strait, where the Zélée visited New Guinea and "North Australia" between 27.iii.1939 and 6.iv.1839. The two ships then travelled to the Philippines and Indonesia again before sailing to Hobart from whence they made another attempt to penetrate Antarctic waters before heading home to France via New Zealand, Torres Strait and Timor. The only landings they made in Australia appear to be Raffles Bay, Northern Territory, and Hobart, Tasmania.

Note: Kirkaldy (1906) listed the species from "Queensland?, Port Essington" which may indicate he was unsure of the location of Port Essington which is actually in the Northern Territory. Its presence in Queensland is therefore uncertain.
