Family Meenoplidae - Meenoplid planthoppers

Press for Key to Australian Genera
Nisia australiensis Woodward

The Family Meenoplidae is represented in Australia by a few species of Nisia Melichar (1903: 53) in the tropical North and two species of Phaconeura Kirkaldy (1906: 427) in the more southerly parts of mainland Australia. Nearly half of the known Australian fauna of Meenoplidae are cavernicolous species described by Hoch (1990).

The family is most easily recognised in Australia by the presence of heavy granulations on the outer claval vein (Vein 1A). Some derbids also have granulations on this vein but these can be differentiated from Meenoplidae by the length of the apical segment of the rostrum which is about as long as wide in derbids but much longer than wide in other fulgoroid families.
