Family Cixiidae - Cixiid planthoppers

Press for list of species Ozoliarus asaica (Kirkaldy)

The Family Cixiidae comprise the most generalised and primitive fulgoroid species. Some genera have retained a third ocellus in the centre of the frons. Cixiids generally are brown or black with tegmina that are transparent with brown veins.

Some cixiids are of economic importance, with Zeoliarus atkinsoni (Myers), the vector of Phormium yellows in New Zealand, and Hyalesthes obsoletus Signoret, a vector of several phytoplasma diseases in Europe.

The Australian fauna was revised by Löcker et al. (2006, 2006a, 2006b, 2007, 2007a, 2010). The New Zealand fauna was revised by Larivière (1999) [update: 12.ii.2001].
