Nycheuma anderida (Kirkaldy) Dicranotropis anderida Kirkaldy 1907: 133 Note: This species was originally described from Queensland and Fiji from female specimens only. Muir (1917) identified male specimens from China, the Philippines and Indonesia as this species and transferred the species first to Delphacodes and later (Muir 1919) to Nilaparvata, as a synonym of Liburnia sordescens (Motschulsky) (=Nilaparvata lugens). Fennah (1965) rejected this placement and synonymy and added Taiwan to the distribution. However, Bellis & Donaldson (2015) have pointed out that Fennah (1965) and Koçak & Kemal ( 2010) misidentified the species and consequently it was transferred to Nycheuma which also required a new name for the species in Queenslandesica. [update: 6.iv.2000] Metcalf (1943) dated the description of Delphax psylloides by Lethierry as 1894 but the description was actually published in 1896. Lethierry (1896) provided the following notes on the occurrence of the species in Sri Lanka: "The species was forwarded from Ceylon by Mr E.E. Green, and the following particulars are taken from the interesting notes he has furnished regarding it. The insect is to be found in its various stages of growth swarming within the clasping sheaths of the leaves of the Indian corn plant (Zea mays). In wet weather it is accompanied by a sooty fungus which has not been noticed at other times. It is also attended by ants. The eggs are buried in the tissues of the plant on the inside of the sheathing leaves, the orifice being concealed by a deposit of white woolly secretion. The effect upon the plants depends upon the period at which they are attacked. If attacked when young, they are stunted and weakened. Older, well established plants do not suffer so much." |
Sardia rostrata Melichar Sardia rostrata Melichar 1903: 96 Note: Muir (1923a: 257) synonymised H. pluto with Sardia rostrata Melichar (1903) on the basis that the differences between them (variations in colour and head length) are not specific. Fennah (1965: 44), apparently unaware of Muir's (1923a) synonymy, also stated that he could find no differences to justify the existence of two species and placed pluto as a subspecies, the typical subspecies being described originally from Sri Lanka. S. rostrata has been recorded widely in the Oriental and Pacific regions from Sri Lanka to Fiji but the geographical limits of the two subspecies were not defined. Kirkaldy (1907: 140) described a variety of H. pluto (var. pallidior) from Queensland and Fiji but there appears to be no subsequent reference to this form. Bellis et al. (2014) listed the species under Kirkaldy's original combination pending further study. Bellis and Donaldson ( 2015) resurrected the synonymies of Hadeodelphax and H. pluto with Sardia and S. rostrata, respectively, after determining that Yang (1989) had misidentified the species. Fennah (1965) recorded the species from "Northern Territory, Glen Ormiston". This appears to be Glenormiston Station which is in western Queensland. [Last update: 23.xii.2015] |

However, he later (Fennah 1975a) gave priority to Kirkaldy's D. disonymos when he synonymised Kirkaldy's two names, despite the status he had given to matanitu and the fact that it appears first in Kirkaldy (1907).
