Genus Massila Walker

Massila sp.
probably M. ptyeloides (Walker)

Genus Massila Walker 1862: 314
Type species: Massila sicca Walker 1862

Distribution: Australia

Species: Four species are known: M. sicca, M. ptyeloides and M. walkeri from NSW and Qld and M. viridicana Jacobi which is only known from Qld.

Note: The four species are almost identical in external appearance and it is only using male genitalia that the species can reliably be differentiated. Fortunately, they are all based on male primary type specimens. Medler (1986b) illustrated the genitalia of M. viridicana, Melder (1987) did the same for M. walkeri and Medler (1990a) illustrated M. sicca and M. ptyeloides. Most specimens exhibit a strong angled crossvein between Cu and M in the forewing and will key to flat25.htm but, in some specimens, this vein is obscured by other crossveins and not evident and these individuals will key to flat47.htm. [Update: 24.iv.2012]
