Genus Galela Distant
Genus Galela Distant 1906: 26
Type species: Birdantis pallescens Distant (Malaya), by original designation
Known species: Two Australian species, G. abdominalis from WA and PNG, and G. parva from WA, both described by Distant (1906).
Notes: This genus is clearly close to Desudaba from which it was differentiated by Lallemand (1963) by the proportions of the head but examination of a specimen of G. parva from Barrow Island, WA, has demonstrated that this feature is not reliable. In addition to the shape of the head, Lallemand (1963) indicates that the apical portion of the tegmen of both species of Galela is hyaline with spots while it is coloured in species of Desudaba, albeit also with spots. The hind wing in Galela has orange-yellow basal colouring in contrast to the bright red of Desudaba. The two Australian species of Galela can be separated by the orange colour of the hind wing. In G. parva the orange has a broad black border while in G. abdominalis the orange is not bordered. This can be seen in images of the holotype of G. abdominalis and a male paratype of G. parva published by Nagai & Porion (1996). [update: 17.xii.2010]
