Genus Balclutha Kirkaldy
Balclutha rosea (Scott)
(Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae: Macrostelini)
Common Name: Grass Leafhoppers
There are several species of Balclutha in Australia and some are extremely common. The small (2-3mm) green leafhoppers attracted to lights in eastern Australia are invariably a species of Balclutha. B. incisa (Matsumura 1902) and B. saltuella (Kirschbaum 1868) are the most common species in New South Wales and Queensland and are very similar in appearance. Other common species are B. rosea (Scott 1876), which is usually pinkish, sometimes dark red, and B. rubrostriata (Melichar 1903), which usually has reddish longitudinal stripes on the head and thorax. The species found in the Pacific region, including Australia, were reviewed by Knight (1987).
