Subfamily Megophthalminae, Tribe Agalliini
The Spotted Leafhopper
The subfamily Megophthalminae was added to the Australian fauna when Hamilton (1999) noted that he regarded the subfamily Agalliinae as a synonym. Dietrich (2005) treated the group as a tribe within the Megophthalminae. The Agalliini is primarily distributed in North, Central and South America with several well known species in Europe. There are a few genera distributed across the Oriental, Pacific and Australasian regions but only one, the spotted leafhopper, Austroagallia torrida Evans, is known in Australia. This species is the vector of rugose leafcurl virus (Grylls 1954). Indonesia also has a single species, Igerna bimaculicollis (Stål), which is widely distributed from Africa to Asia.
