Subfamily Evacanthinae: Tribe Evacanthini
Evacanthus militaris (Distant) from India.
The Evacanthini is a relatively small tribe of the Evacanthinae. It is distributed from North America across Europe and extends into the eastern Oriental region with a handful of species in Indonesia. A single species, Evacanthus papuensis (Distant), from West Papua (=Irian Jaya) is the only representative of the group in the Australasian region although a specimen, tentatively identified as Preta gratiosa (Melichar) is known from Flores.
Evacanthines have the swollen frons typical of xylem-feeding groups such as the Cicadellinae although the feeding preferences for the group are unknown. The Evacanthini can be distinguished from the tribes of the Cicadellinae by having a medial carina on the frontoclypeus and a transverse carinae submarginally on the vertex in front of the ocelli. In some species, this carina extends right across the vertex, albeit somewhat discontinuously, but in many it is restricted to two short sections on either side of the vertex in front of the ocelli.
