Amrasca biguttula biguttula (Ishida), The Indian Cotton Leafhopper Chlorita biguttula Ishida
1913: Known hosts: Gossypium, Bischofia javanica, Althaea, Hibiscus, Epithrix (Malvaceae), sweet potato (Dworakowska 1970b) Note: Ghauri (1983) gave a comprehensive review of the historical nomenclature of this species and points out that the first report was by Ishida (1913) which was published on 12.iii.1913 and predated Shiraki (1913) which was published on 31.iii.1913 (A.S. Sohi, quoted in Ghauri 1983). Ghauri (1983) also recommended that the name Amrasca devastans (Distant) be used since this name is based on type material held in BMNH and the whereabouts of the type material for Chorita biguttula (Ishida) was unknown. A proposal to have the nameA. devastans preserved by the ICZN was never made so Ishida's name remains as the valid name of the species. Ghauri (1983) made no comment about Dworakowska's (1970b) proposed synonymy of Empoasca quadrinotatissima Dlabola (1957: 296). If accepted, then this extends the range of the species to Afghanistan. This species is of quarantine concern to Australia. [update: link to PaDIL site 7.viii.2008] |
