Many of the most obvious (and, in fact, most useful) features of membracids, including the lateral and medial pronotal processes, wing venation, colour and overall dimensions, may vary quite considerably within species. Most specimens can be identified using this key but there will be aberrant specimens that do not key out correctly. The authors would apologise for this but the blame lies with the unreliable Australian climate which no doubt forces local membracids to compromise on development of prominent processes when food for developing nymphs is in short supply.
