Genus Stenocotis Stål

Press for checklist of Australian LedriniStenocotis depressa (Walker), male

Genus Stenocotis Stål 1854 : 254
Type species: Stenocotis subvittata Stål, designated by Kirkaldy 1906: 369

Known species:Stenocotis depressa (Walker)

Comments: The only species of Stenocotis is the most "named" species of Australian leafhopper with more synonyms than any other. This is a reflection of the wide variation in both size and colour found in both sexes and the belief held in 1851 that species did not change over time. Males tend to be darker and smaller than females but the ranges in these features overlap considerably. This is also the most widespread species being found in all States of Australia as well as Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The species is common on trunks of eucalypts and is often seen feeding during the day unlike other stenocotines which appear to feed mainly at night.
