Subfamily Deltocephalinae: Tribe Scaphoideini

Press for species listScaphoideus foshoi Fletcher & Semeraro

The Scaphoideini are represented in Australia by three species of the genus Scaphoideus, nine of Diemoides and one each of Melanetettix and Thamnophryne which were transfered into the tribe by Zahniser & Dietrich (2013). All species of Scaphoideus are brightly marked, with black, orange and brown spots and stripes on a white background. Species of Diemoides are often marked with red or orange. The species of Melanetettix, which includes numerous species in New Guinea and Melanesia, are also distinctively marked with transverse bands of various colours across the front of the head and usually with round markings on the tegmen. Thamnophryne nysias is less distinctively marked. The tribe was regarded as a nomen nudum by Zahniser & Dietrich (2010) since it first appeared in a thesis. As a result, the genera which had been placed into the tribe were regarded as being unplaced to tribe. However, the thesis abstract was published as Oman (1943b) thereby validating the tribal name (Zahniser, pers. comm. 2011). The tribe was recharacterised by Zahniser & Dietrich (2013) who broadened its definition. [update: 4.vii.2013; 10.iv.2017]

Scaphoideus foshoi Fletcher and Semeraro 2001: 2
Scaphoideus festivus (Matsumura), sensu Evans 1966: 235

Note: Fletcher and Semeraro (2001) note that there is some variation in the structure of the male genitalia between populations in SE Qld, N. Qld and NT but these differences were not regarded as warranting species differentiation. Evans' (1966) illustration of "S. festivus" appears to be of S. foshoi.

Scaphoideus pristidens Kirkaldy

Scaphoideus pristidens Kirkaldy 1906: 333; Fletcher and Semeraro 2001: 2

Note: Evans (1966) recorded this species from Australia as a junior synonym of S. festivus Matsumura (1902: 384) but this was a misidentification, S. festivus not occurring in Australia (Fletcher and Semeraro 2001). Evans' (1966) illustration of "S. festivus" appears to be of S. foshoi.[update: 27.ii.2001]
