Subfamily Eurymelinae: Tribe Pogonoscopini
The treehoppers in this tribe are adapted for living in ants' nests (Day and Pullen 1999). They have narrow head and small eyes and the head, especially the face, and thorax bear scattered fine long hairs that presumably provide some sensory function. Pogonoscopines are not commonly seen by collectors since they spend the day underground and have usually only been collected when ant nests are excavated. Day and Pullen (1999) have reported that they are escorted by ants onto the trunks of trees at night and are highly phototaxic. The Tribe is a highly modified derivative of the Tribe Eurymelini and share a similar colour pattern, although faded to brown and white.
