Genus Neocanthuchus Day

Neocanthuchus barringtonensis DayNeocanthuchus barringtonensis Day

Neocanthuchus Day 1999: 686. Type species: Neocanthuchus tropicus Day, by original designation

Known species: Two species, both described by Day (1999)

Distribution: NSW, Qld

Comments: The two species of Neocanthuchus differ in the shape and disposition of the lateral pronotal processes in anterior view with those of N. tropicus being narrow and extending directly laterally while those of N. barringtonensis extend dorsally well above the median height of the pronotum and are broad before an abruptly tapered apex. Day (1999) suggests that this may be a relictural genus now limited to the cool climates of the higher peaks of eastern Australia and related to numerous genera which evolved with the warmer drier conditions of lower altitudes.
