Pogonella bispinus (Stål)Pogonella bispinus (Stål)

Pogonella Evans 1966: 285; Day 1999: 696. Type species: Centrotypus minutus Goding 1903, by original designation

Known species: Two species are listed by Day (1999) who indicates that a number of undescribed species exist and that Protinotus doddi might also belong in this genus

Distribution: Widespread in Australia, including Lord Howe Island.

Comments: These are the common small (3.5-5mm), brown membracids found across Australia. P. minutus is the smallest Australian species of the family. Day (1999) notes that the genus is not well defined and may be polyphyletic.
