Subfamily Tartessinae: Tribe Thymbrini

Press for species list Putoniessa aroka Stevens

The leafhoppers included in the Thymbrini are medium sized to large insects with generally brown or mottled colouring. The tribe is entirely restricted to the Australasian region. Except for the genus Novothymbris, which is endemic to New Zealand and is the dominant cicadellid in that country (Knight 1974a) [update: 12.ii.2001], the Thymbrini are restricted to Australia with some records from New Guinea. The tribe was transferred from the Ledrinae to the Tartessinae by Jones & Deitz (2009)

Putoniessa mackei Evans

 Putoniessa mackei Evans 1966: 121

Note: Stevens (1994: 1052) considered a number of isolated specimens from widespread localities in SE Australia to be very close to this species but was unable to establish that they were all conspecific. It is possible that a complex of closely related species occurs across SE Australia, centred on P. mackei, but it is also possible that the species is widespread but uncommon. The Tasmanian record is typical of these isolated occurrences.

Putoniessa nigrella Evans

Putoniessa nigrella Evans 1966: 123

Note: The record from Queensland is based on two specimens in JWE labelled "Burleigh" with "Q" or "QLD". It is possible that this locality record is incorrect. The locality in Queensland is Burleigh Heads while there is a locality in Victoria named Burleigh which is otherwise in the centre of the distribution of the species. It is possible that the writer of the label incorrectly assumed the locality was in Queensland. However, since the label includes reference to Queensland, the record of the species in that state is included here.

Rhotidus kirkaldyi Metcalf 1955: 265, nom. nov. for Rhotidus stali Kirkaldy, synonymised by Evans 1966: 127

Note: Kirkaldy (1907: 26) suggested a synonymy between Rhotidus Walker and Ledropsis White. This would have brought Ledropsis stali Melichar into senior homonymy with Ledropsis stali (Kirkaldy) so Metcalf (1955) proposed the new name R. kirkaldyi for R. stali Kirkaldy. Evans (1966) mispelled the species name as "teleformis" but the original was as above.
