Subfamily Ulopinae: Tribe Ulopini
Austrolopa brunensis Evans
The Ulopini are small
primitive leafhoppers which are not adapted for jumping. Many of the included species have
the hindwings reduced or absent and are therefore also incapable of flight. Some species
are dimorphic, with both a brachypterous and macropterous form. The hind tibia is not
nearly as modified as it is in most leafhoppers and lacks the spines and spurs typical of
most other leafhopper groups. The Australian and NZ species are cryptic, usually coloured
with shades of brown or grey. The New Zealand fauna comprises
a number of species in the endemic genus Novolopa [update: 12.ii.2001]. Only a
single species has been described from Indonesia although little taxonomic work on the
Indonesian fauna has been undertaken and there may be further species undescribed [update:
26.iv.2002].

Austrolopa brunensis Evans Austrolopa brunensis Evans 1937a:
48 Known hosts: Podocarpus (Podocarpaceae), Bossiaea (Fabaceae), Richea (Epacridaceae) [update: 30.x.2000], Cassinia (Asteraceae), Pultenaea (Fabaceae) [update: 5.ix.2001], Note: Evans (1966) differentiates this species from the following species by the length of the crown. In A. brunensis the crown is longer in the centre than against the eyes while in A. victoriensis the crown is of even length throughout. The dark form illustrated here matches the colour of A. victoriensis as described by Evans (1966) and not that of A. brunensis, but the crown is clearly longer in the centre than against the eyes. |
